BM1 was on watch while onboard the USS Waddle on or about 0130 01AUG2025. While standing watch as Petty Officer of the Watch (POOW), he noticed flames and black smoke coming from one of the intake vents on the port side. He immediately recognized the danger and grabbed an AFFF extinguisher from inside the port break, ran to the fire, and extinguished the flames. After discharging the fire extinguisher and eliminating the fire, he returned to the quarterdeck where he found the OOD, ENS Newguy, unconscious, having passed out from stress. He again sprang into action, calling away both the medical emergency and the extinguished fire. He resusitated ENS Newguy and conducted effective turnover with the duty corpsman and Emergency Medical Services in port.
